COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Mid-Ohio Youth Mentoring will host a comedy benefit show at Liederkranz in Mansfield on Jan. 31 to raise funds for its youth mentoring programs; comedian Scott Dunn and guests will perform after 7 p.m. (tickets cost $20 and doors open at 6 p.m.)  Mansfield News Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mansfield Public Art Commission and the library are hosting a memorial art exhibit to honor the late Ruthie Akuchie (Black History Month). A dedication will be held at 5 p.m. on Feb. 5 in the library’s second-floor atrium at 43 W. 3rd St., and the exhibit will run through February and March.  Mansfield News Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At their Jan. 21 meeting, the Mid-Ohio ESC board honored retiring director Jennifer Crum before she retires at January’s end plus welcomed board members Mike Grady and Brent Winand and named Douglas Theaker president and William McFarland vice president while recognizing School Board Recognition Month.  Mansfield News Journal
  • Lyla Maniaci, a Lucas Junior High student, won the Richland County Spelling Bee on Thursday (judicious was the championship word) and will take part in the tri-county bee in the coming days.  Mansfield News Journal
  • The Ohio District 5 Area Agency on Aging announces its 2026 scholarship program offering four awards for students studying aging or disability services, with applications due by March 15. Two awards of $1,000 are for four-year college students and two awards of $500 are for eligible candidates at technical schools or with family ties to agency staff.  Mansfield News Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio officials urge caution as frigid weather continues, with highs in the teens and overnight lows dipping below zero. Gov. Mike DeWine advised residents to check their vehicles, bundle up, and stay alert for frostbite and hypothermia warnings — a stance set for the coming week.  Mansfield News Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Clear Fork’s Raegan Sudol received 2,591 votes and was named Athlete of the Week last week. Voting is open and will end at 7 p.m. Friday for community members to select this week’s honoree.  Mansfield News Journal
