  • Samuel Stambaugh Bloom settled in Shelby in 1856 and became a businessman and elected official who helped draft the law that established The Ohio State University (a well-known Buckeye school). He also started the local newspaper and telephone exchange and served on community boards, leaving a lasting mark in Richland County.  1812Blockhouse

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Mansfield Youth Theatre will present Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s Mary Poppins on the Renaissance Theatre stage on April 25, 26, and 27 as part of the Mechanics Bank Education Series at 7 PM on Friday and Saturday and 2:30 PM on Sunday. A free sensory-friendly performance will be held on April 26 at 1 PM for families with sensory needs—registration is required for limited tickets.  1812Blockhouse

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohioans who plan to fly must obtain a REAL ID by May 7 because TSA will start checking IDs in May; they must visit a BMV location with required documents and pay $24.50 for a four-year card (or $48 for an eight-year card) with processing taking 10 business days.  Mansfield News Journal

  • Three Richland County girls basketball players earned Division IV All-Ohio honors for the 2024-25 season—Shelby’s Eve Schwemley and Lexington’s Makaree Chapman were named first team while Shelby’s Serena Ramsey received an honorable mention by the Ohio Prep Sports Media Association.  Mansfield News Journal
  • The Richland County Softball Scoreboard (updated daily) shows that on March 22, Lexington won 2-1 over Ontario when Camryn McGuire hit the winning run and Shelby beat Huron 11-0 in five innings. Today, Lexington will travel to New Philadelphia while Ontario hosts Highland and Shelby will play in Pleasant.  Mansfield News Journal
