  • The Shelby Foundation's Women's Fund awarded its largest-ever grant cycle by giving $13,450 to four local groups that help women and children in Richland County. The grants went to projects that make comfort capes for children, help women rebuild after abuse, provide summer lunches, and run a Girl Scout camp.  1812Blockhouse

CRIME NEWS

  • Mansfield man Bryce Witchey, 29, was ruled competent to stand trial after a second evaluation confirmed he understood the charges against him—he faces 30 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material and one count of attempted importuning, and his trial set for April 24 has been delayed for further review.  Mansfield News Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Ontario High School Theater Department will present the spring musical Big Fish at the school auditorium on April 4 at 7:00 p.m., April 5 at 7:00 p.m., and on April 6 at 2:00 p.m.—tickets cost $10 available online or with cash at the door. The musical, based on the novel by Daniel Wallace and Tim Burton’s film, promises a story of family and fantasy to delight all ages.  1812Blockhouse

  • In October 1857, bank clerk G.A. Sturges came to Mansfield with $930 to exchange for gold or silver but was met by a mob led by lieutenant governor Tom Ford — the mob threw back the notes and forced him to flee. Two days later, the firm’s partners faced the same hostility until B. Burns, Esq. calmed the crowd amid a period of financial crisis.  1812Blockhouse
