An eight-year-old girl named Elyana Stephens died on May 26 from a methadone overdose when tests revealed 867 milliliters of methadone in her system—neighbors recalled many police cars outside her home—and the Richland County Coroner’s Office ruled her death accidental.

Central Ohio schools are preparing to follow a new state law that will ban cellphone use during the school day starting January 1st, 2026 — schools require students to turn off and store phones except for emergencies or medical needs.
