COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Richland County Children Services and Richland Correctional Institution are hosting a holiday toy drive to collect new unwrapped toys for 170 foster care youths in Richland County—donations will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday until Dec. 1 at drop-off locations on Scholl Road, N. Main St., and Ashland Road.  Mansfield News Journal
  • The Orange Cone Festival is set to take over downtown Mansfield on Oct. 26 with live music, karaoke, and free giveaways in the Carrousel District from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.—the event is sponsored by local businesses and will bring neighbors together.  Mansfield News Journal

  • Grandpa Joe's Candy Shop has opened at 80 W. Third St. — it offers candy, chocolate bars, soda pop and ice cream to local customers.  Mansfield News Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Alesia Litteral, a domestic violence survivor, shared her story after surviving a brutal shooting and stabbing by her late husband in 2019 — her fiancé, Russell Hannah, stands with her as she rebuilds her life.  Mansfield News Journal

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Ohio gas prices increased last week to an average of $3.01 per gallon from $2.72, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration—making the state’s price about 0.4% lower than the national average of $3.02. The report noted that over the past year, prices ranged from $2.72 to $3.41 and last year’s average was $2.95 per gallon.  Mansfield News Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Today, during the Mansfield Senior vs. Madison football game, School Specialty and Spherion Mid-Ohio will donate a truckload of school supplies worth $20K to Mansfield City Schools. The supplies—including notebooks, binders, crayons, paint, glue sticks and markers—will be staged near the field at halftime to honor 33 local students who interned last summer with School Specialty.  Mansfield News Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • MWCD announced it will lower lake levels at several lakes starting early November to create extra flood storage for snowmelt and spring rains and to perform critical maintenance such as shoreline stabilization and sediment removal—measures that will help protect downstream areas when water returns to normal by February. The plan supports safe flood control and continued lake functionality for local recreation.  Mansfield News Journal
  • Recent rain has eased the drought that left many gardens with withered perennials, but brown, crispy leaves remain. Gardeners are advised to prune dead parts and add mulch—steps that will help new growth before winter.  Mansfield News Journal

HEALTH NEWS

  • Richland Public Health is giving away free Safe RX locking pill bottles and Deterra drug deactivation pouches (available at 555 Lexington Ave. in Mansfield) so families can safely store and throw away unused drugs (funded by a Drug Free Community grant to help stop misuse).  Mansfield News Journal

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • In Richland County, the median home listing price dropped to $226,500 in September — down 2.4% from August and 8.9% from last year, with homes averaging 1,518 square feet at $144 per square foot. Listings took a median of 39 days on the market compared to the national median of 62 days.  Mansfield News Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Ontario Warriors defeated Norwalk 6-0 — a dominant win — and Lexington Lady Lex beat Madison 6-1 on Wednesday night at Lexington High School, showing high urgency to win district titles. Lexington will play Maumee and Ontario will face Celina at noon on October 25th as both teams continue their postseason campaigns.  Mansfield News Journal
